Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…
Dear Friend,
Let's keep walking...
At the end of our street, we come to the beginning of the village center. They are currently working on this road to widen it as only one car can pass at a time going around the bend. Despite the fact that many European cars are smaller, more people in the village are beginning to drive some smaller SUV's and different businesses have vans and smaller trucks.

This is a view looking back to the end of our street (between the tall building with the red clay tile roof and the short yellow cafe). Garbage dumpsters and recycling bins are located in the center as well as throughout the village. We carry our garbage to these bins for pickup. Because of the financial crisis in Greece, this service has been on strike off and on causing huge (smelly) problems in some of the larger cities.

Our favorite place for souvlaki and pita. Kolya and I go here a couple of times a week for takeout... 2 Souvlaki and French Fries for Kolya and a Pita for me plus bread to share for 5,50 Euros. The owners lived and worked in Canada for a while, so speak a little English and are excited to see us stop by. My Aunt's often ordered food for us from here when we would visit. The french fries are my favorite... cooked in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and organo.

This store carries just about everything you would need for your household from kitchen and bath to bedroom. Our neighbor Maria ordered our bed from here before our arrival. It is owned by and man and his son. We stopped here to buy a kitchen garbage bin when we arrived. We couldn't find what we wanted at first and after a bit of a game of charades, the father motioned us to follow him to a small elevator in the back of the building. Caroline bravely boarded with me and we were brought to the storage below. Then the man used a special hook and took the perfect garbage bin down from a high shelf for us and we rode back up all pleased at what we had accomplished. The man's son is also a beekeeper, so this is the best place to buy honey in the village. (I highly recommend their fly swatter selection too...)

Now we round the bend for a view of the main street in the village...
More soon!
XOXO,
Karen June
