Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…

Sunday in the Village

We woke up this morning with the sound of church bells echoing through the village. The services start at 7am and end at 10am though most are not in attendance for the entire service. Today's service also included a 40 day memorial for a young man.

Kolya with the women preparing to hand out the wheat and cake after the memorial service. They also handed out white candied almonds that are usually given as wedding favors. This is because the young man was single.

The wheat and cake...

A new addition in Arfara since our last visit is a produce market in the platia on Sundays. There are about eight vendors with fruits, vegetables and even fish.

Our produce from the market... Watermelon for 1,50 Euros and four cucumbers for 1 Euro. The fruits and vegetables are so fresh and delicious. We ate some cucumbers for lunch with olive oil, feta cheese, oregano and olives (from our friend Maria). The watermelon will be a refreshing treat after our nap.
