Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…

Renovations in Arfara

This summer I am doing some much needed renovations to my house in Arfara. Over the next few weeks I have many projects to tackle. I'm starting with the flooring in the house. Half of the house currently has (very uneven) painted concrete floors. The other half (which was added on later) has rough sub flooring. I am having laminate wood floors installed in the majority of the house and then tile in the entryway and kitchen. The tile guy Philip (we are related) came to measure the kitchen yesterday and told me that due to the need to level the concrete floors and then mortar and tile the floor will be raised too much to keep the existing cabinets. So today another guy came to measure for new cabinets and he will bring drawings of his design tomorrow. We also visited the tile store and I picked out tiles for the floor and backsplash. My selection is limited to what is in stock due to my timeline, but I found some nice tiles. You will see the backsplash tiles in the first photograph. I opted not to have the decorative accents though. ;). The second photograph shows the floor tiles and the third my grout selection. I also chose a double sink and faucet... Well they were really my only choices at this shop... Many thanks to Irene from the tile store for her help! Her shop is on the way into Kalamata but she lives in Arfara as well. This project is sure to be quite the collaborative effort.

Now we are sitting waiting for a guy about my courtyard wall. This will involve a bulldozer. Yikes!
