We go to the beach almost every day in Kalamata 15km from Arfara). There is a bus that leaves from our village at 9am and leaves the beach at 12pm. Other city buses come at various intervals throughout the day, but the illusive bus schedule has yet to be found. If you ask a local where to get one, they instead rattle off the approximate times and tell you that it is easy... just board the bus at the butcher, arrive at the depot, cross the street, find a bus with the #1, ring the bell to get off and so on... So far, we have lucked out with joining neighbors to the beach, but I think our first bus adventure will be on Tuesday. Wish us luck!
In Kalamata there is a long stretch of coastline outlining the Messinian Bay. Dotted with tavernas and cafes who offer umbrellas and lounge chairs in exchange for drink orders. Most people drink Ouzo or frappes and spend hours laying in the sun or swimming in the sea. Young and old play paddle ball along the water. People come from all over to enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean's highly saturated salt water on their skin. Many gargle the water for good health as well. the water is the perfect temperature for cooling off and a sea breeze counteracts the blazing Mediterranean sun. Vendors walk this long stretch of beach many times a day selling their wares. Many are immigrants from African countries who buy jewelry, handbags, sundresses, etc. wholesale in Athens and then barter with beach goers to make their living. There are also henna tattoo artists and massage therapists offering their services for a fee. Vendors carry their wares on large boards, on their heads and around their necks. Some are a bit pushy, but most are friendly and appreciative of your patronage. We have made "friends" with one of the vendors and wait for him to come down the beach when we want to shop for gifts or for ourselves. He gave both me and Caroline anklets today to thank us. I'm sure we'll see him out there toting his wares tomorrow...

Happy 4th of July! I look forward to every post you make. I really like hearing about "the day in the life, of living in Greece". Tell Koyla that Howard and Medina say HI!
