Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…
Dear Friend,
I thought you might like a tour of our home here in Arfara, Greece. Most of our time is spent outside or in the kitchen, so I'll show you the kitchen first. Our house is quite old... well at least according to American standards. The village of Arfara used to be located further up the mountain, but as the village became more crowded, residents moved further down to where the center of Arfara now lies. However, parts of Arfara still remain there.

Kitchen counter, cupboard and stove... the stove top lifts up to reveal the burners. My Aunts used the stove very little and favored the gas burner on the counter.

The kitchen counter tops and sink are made from heavy white marble. You can see our refrigerator on the right. It is small by American standards, but quite typical for a European kitchen. Ours is currently filled with mostly fresh fruits and veggies and Greek cheeses.

Our second cupboard has more dishes and kitchen supplies. On top, you will see a mortar and pestle as well as a mini bar of sorts... Ouzo, Nemean Wine, Greek Table Wine and Raisin Brandy.
The window above the counter looks out to some neighbors land dotted with olive trees. You might notice an incense burner on the windowsill similar to the ones at the graves.

Here is a view of our kitchen table. All of the walls and floors in this part of the house are made from cement and painted. The cement floor is quite uneven as it was poured so long ago. I think it adds to the charm of the house.

A few years ago, my Aunts had radiators put in for the first time. Before that, there was a wood stove in the corner of the kitchen where the table stands. The stove provided heat for only the immediate area and my Aunts would have to huddle under heavy wool blankets to keep warm while they slept on the other end of the house.

The front kitchen window overlooks our courtyard and neighbors homes are close by with a narrow street in between.

Thanks for visiting!

XOXO,
Karen June

You read my mind. I was so hoping to see the inside of your family home. I can see why you love the kitchen. May we be able to join you sometime in the future. I love the blue ocean water, you'll have to take a few pics at the beach one morning. We leave for Dinsey soon!
