Dear Friend,
We arrived Wednesday in Arfara after quick stops in Athens and Ancient Corinth. Thanks to Vodafone Greece, we are now set up with internet and cell phones. Arfara had a new 3G tower installed just two months ago, so our wireless connection is quite good. There have been many changes here since our last trip in January including a new tunnel and section of highway cutting 30 minutes off of our trip from Athens.
We arrived to a freshly painted house both inside and out and neighbors coming out of their homes to greet us. My cousin George is here from Athens and helped us unload all of our luggage and purchases from IKEA Athens to set up the house. He also brought us dinner from a local Taverna... chicken souvlaki, Greek salad (local Kalamata olives!), fresh bread, and french fries. Everything was deliciously drenched in olive oil. Have you ever had french fries in Greece? I daydream about them back at home. Cooked in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and oregano... they are definitely my desert island food choice. We pulled our wooden chairs with rush seats up to the rough-hewn wooden table that my family has eaten at for decades. This is the kitchen where my Papou was born and his four sisters in the years after.... Irene, Theodora, Martha and Voula. I'm home.
