Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…
Dear Friend,

Every day in the mornings and after rest time the quiet of the village is broken by the sounds of trucks with megaphones winding their way through the streets. Καρπουζιών (Karpouzia),πεπόνια (Peponia),πατάτες (Patates), ντοματών(Tomates)! Gypsy vendors come through the village selling fruits and vegetables, chickens, clothing, shoes and even patio furniture. One morning my neighbor called out my name to come and look down the street. I walked through the gate to our courtyard and found a trail of Karpouzia as far as I could see in either direction. Apparently a truck had piled a few too many watermelons and they began to topple off of the truck. We quickly grabbed some wash bins and filled them up for her chickens and for Stavroula’s and Kiki’s chickens as well. I’m adding harvesting watermelons from the street to my favorite things to do in Arfara.

XOXO,

Karen June

A vendor's truck piled high with plastic patio chairs and tables.

These Gypsies had stopped to sell some of their furniture, but were a little too pushy...
slowly dropping the high price and then actually bringing a table through
my neighbor's gate to try to make a sale.

Karpouzia in the street!

The watermelon went all the way up the hill as well as down and around the bend.
It was quite an exciting morning!
