“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…
Dear Friend,

Maybe you would like to see some more of our house here in Arfara...

Our bathroom is a bit more rustic than in the United States. Everything is housed in one space...sink, shower and toilet. Multi-taskers rejoice!

The entrance to the bathroom is from the terrace. Like many of the older homes in Arfara, bathrooms were added on much later. Before that, people either built outhouses or used the fields. So many houses in the village now have bathrooms with only exterior doors. For the summer months, this is really not a problem, but winter months would bring cold treks to the toilet and shower. My Aunts had considered knocking down an opening for an interior door, but were concerned about dust from the concrete and the structure of the house.

Plumbing in Greece is a bit different than in the United States as well. So, little garbage bins are kept next to the toilet for toilet paper. Remembering to do this has been a bit of a challenge for a 5 year old.

At first, our new bathroom was an adjustment, but here is to new experiences... and cleaning the toilet while you shower...

XOXO,
Karen June

P.S. Today is Tuesday the 13th! In Greece, the superstition is over Tuesday the 13th rather than Friday the 13th.

wow! that is a very practical setup...as long as you don't wash the TP when you accidentally drop the shower head!

We'll its a step up for standing over a whole which I had to do on a Greek boat and almost fell over, no bars or anything to hold on too.
