Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Many life experiences have led me to this place and time… join me as I spend a summer in a small village in Greece where generations of my family have lived and where I now hope to put down a few roots. Along my journey I will write letters to you to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to create your own wherever you live or travel…
Dear Friend,

I thought I would show you a bit of the village today. Almost every morning we take a shortcut to the bakery. Each day we see something new... a cactus shaped like a heart, a skinny cat perched in a nook in a stone wall, a brightly colored doorway or some neighbors passing by saying Καλημέρα (Kaliméra - Good Morning) Τι κάνετε; (ti kánete? - How are you?) We reply Γειά σας (ya sas - Hello) εντάξει (endaksi - o.k.).

One morning we stopped and talked to an elderly gentleman. He talked for a very long time. We smiled and said Ναι, Ναι (Ne, Ne - Yes, Yes). He needed someone to listen. We are good at that. I think he was complaining about his hip, but it could have just as easily been something else. So, here are some things we see along our morning walk. Wish you were here to join us...

XOXO,
Karen June

Our shortcut to the right

Tree-lined Path

The hill that seems much steeper in the hot Mediterranean sun

Heart-shaped Cactus

Cascading Bougainvillea... my absolute favorite plant

Mediterranean blue gate with white flowers in the drive.
These flowers are more common in some of the neighboring villages.
Every year before Easter, people do their Spring cleaning
and paint their steps walkways, walls and tree trunks
in bright white to make everything clean and fresh.

Vivid potted plants line this house's veranda.
You can see the solar water heater on their roof.
Our house has one too.

A Greek flag proudly displayed on a house

Firewood stacked along a drive

Houses closer to town

Local Taverna

Kolya running ahead anxious to get to the bakery
