Dear Friend,
I must share the saga of the elusive bus schedule with you. This issue for some reason has been the mystery and challenge of our adventure thus far. It is one of those things that seems so simple in your own culture and home that you don't even think it is worth explaining to someone. So, for weeks I have trying to figure out the bus schedule. I've asked friends, I've asked family... I've even asked the village bus driver! But, no one can seem to direct me to a bus schedule. Each one of them spouts off a lengthy list of times along with exceptions for this day and that and if there is a strike or... I've been told it is SIMPLE... just be at the doorstop across from the butcher at "X" time as long as the sun is shining or if the butcher slaughtered a pig the day before... Once you are in the city and want to return just take this bus then that... and here is a rattled off list of the times the bus comes back to the village... of course with these exceptions... I actually made it to the bus depot downtown one day. Standing before me on the wall in all its glory was a bus schedule! I started rummaging through my bag for my camera when I noticed a big sign below the schedule... "This schedule is not accurate. Please see a station employee for correct times." What!!??!! We missed our bus that day. I don't even want to relive those details. Thanks to a very expensive cab ride home, we are no longer at the bus station.
So, this story of course has a happy ending. A few days ago, we gave it one more go... I handed pen and paper to a neighbor and insisted on the morning bus times for the next day. We took the 9:50 bus into Kalamata. After shopping, we successfully made our way via city bus to the depot where I boldly demanded a printed schedule. After much rummaging in the station office, I proudly walked away with my own schedule! I think I may have danced my way out of there waiving it madly in the air.
Tomorrow we are going to try the beach bus... I've heard it's SIMPLE.
